Campground History
Hardwood Lake Campground in Ogemaw County, Michigan, sits on 40 acres owned by the state and was once a 4-H and scout camp. After initially being developed by the DNR for public camping, it was closed due to low use. In the mid-1980s, the DNR offered 20 acres to Richland Township, which initially declined but later accepted after local residents pushed for redevelopment. Due to insurance concerns, ownership was first transferred to Ogemaw County in 1988, while community volunteers began cleaning and improving the site, including adding electricity. In 1990, full ownership passed to Richland Township, which secured grants for facilities like a pavilion and playground. A caretaker was hired to maintain order, and the campground has grown popular with summer and seasonal campers. Continued community support, grant funding, and volunteer efforts have improved amenities, making the campground a valued local and tourist resource with around 40 campsites and a well-maintained lake area managed by a property owners' association.
